Dr.Vanka received her PhD degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in August 2014. She holds a Master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin and a Post Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad. She earned her B.Arch. degree from Visveswaraya Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur (now known as Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology). Dr.Vanka’s work experience spans research and practice in the fields of architecture, urban design and urban planning in India and the United States of America. She has previously taught undergraduate and graduate students at KRV Institute of Architecture – Mumbai, University of Texas – Austin and University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. Since joining RVCA as full – time faculty in June 2015, Dr.Vanka has been teaching courses in both the architecture and urban design programmes. She teaches Sociology and Economics, Physical Planning, and Contemporary Architecture to undergraduate students of architecture. In the Masters programme in Urban Design, she teaches subjects related to urban sociology and the politics of urban and regional development, with a focus on Indian cities. She also coordinates the Urban Design Thesis Studio and guides graduate students in their thesis projects. Dr.Vanka’s research interests include urban spatial politics, spatial planning and state-society relations vis-à-vis governance in the Global South. She has publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has also presented her research in international conferences in the US and India.
